Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the structures within the body.

Patient Preparation Instructions

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled ultrasound exam to register. This will help us to stay on schedule and expedite the completion of your exam.

  • If you are scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound, aorta, or right upper quadrant, please do not eat or drink anything for 6 - 8 hours before your exam.
  • If you are scheduled for a renal ultrasound, please do not eat or drink (except water) anything for 3-4 hours before your exam. Please ensure that you are well-hydrated before your exam.
  • If you are scheduled for a pelvic ultrasound or fetal ultrasound, and you are in your 1st trimester, please drink Three 8 oz. glasses of water 1 hour before your exam. Your bladder must be full to complete these exams.
  • If you are scheduled for an ultrasound Breast, Guided Breast Biopsy, OB 2nd/3rd trimester, Prostate, Spleen, Testicle/Scrotum, or Thyroid, there is no required preparation for your exam.
